Living

Getting hypnotized by the constant monologue inside your own head
It is unimaginably hard to stay conscious and alive.
Truth is about life before death;
most suicides are actually dead long before they pull the trigger.

It is unimaginably hard to stay conscious and alive
going through your comfortable, prosperous, respectable adult life dead,
most suicides are actually dead long before they pull the trigger.
You get to decide what to worship

going through your comfortable, prosperous, respectable adult life dead
being conscious and aware enough to choose what you pay attention to.
You get to decide what to worship.
You consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t

being conscious and aware enough to choose what you pay attention to
banal platitudes can have life-or-death importance.
You consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t
Being the absolute center of the universe

banal platitudes can have life-or-death importance.
Truth is about life before death.
Being the absolute center of the universe
Not getting hypnotized by the constant monologue inside your own head

At the age of five KENNETH J. SMITH wrote a Haiku with the thoughtful help of my Mother. After winning first prize for a local poetry contest, he tasted the satisfaction of writing down his feelings and thought in poetry form. While most of his work has been free verse, he finds great solace in utilizing all types of forms in capturing his poems. His work has been previously published in Prairie Poetry, Main Channel Voices, and Spindrift; Stories of Teton Valley.
