Poetry Prompt: AWP 2014

AWP 14 Header

This post is part of a series of weekly found poetry prompts. If you have an idea for a found poetry source, email Senior Poetry Editor Beth Ayer.

We’re at AWP 2014 in Seattle this week. So naturally, we feel compelled to look for poetry there. This week’s prompt gives you many options for source text:

  • Scroll through the AWP schedule and erase or remix the text you find there. Maybe even deploy The Deletionist.
  • If you’re at the conference, head to the bookfair and collect pamphlets, brochures and any other bookfair paraphernalia you pick up. Use these as source texts.
  • Jot down words and phrases from sessions and AWP signage. Use these as your source texts.

You’re now the Nancy Drew of AWP 2014. Please share your poems and sources in the comments!

    There is a place
where you can get close, a place

    where you can actually touch,
    demand, learn to unlock

your door in the dark, your eyes
    kaleidoscope, lungs fill

with exotic birds. There’s no mistaking:
    once you break

    the window, you will not
    be able to close it.

    We make sense of things
in other places than our minds:

    arrhythmic heartbeats
    gathering stories,

    our bodies a small branch
    on a quick fall down.
